Lithium Boat Battery Care in Australian Heat

Keep the pack out of direct engine and sun heat, check its charge and discharge temperature limits against what the compartment actually reaches, and avoid leaving it at full charge in hot weather.

Lithium Boat Battery Care in Australian Heat: steps

  1. Measure what the compartment actually reaches

Put a thermometer in the battery space through a hot week before you trust a datasheet range. An enclosed locker on a closed boat in summer regularly exceeds what people assume.

  2. Check both temperature limits

Packs have separate charge and discharge temperature ranges, and the charge range is usually narrower. High-temperature charge cut-off is a protection, not a fault, and it will stop you charging on the hottest afternoon.

  3. Get the pack away from heat sources

Engine bay, exhaust runs and a sun-loaded deck above. Moving the bank is cheaper than shortening its life.

  4. Leave air around each pack

Packs tight against each other and a bulkhead cannot shed heat. Keep the clearance the manufacturer specifies.

  5. Avoid sitting at full charge in the heat

High state of charge and high temperature together are what age cells fastest. A boat on shore power through summer should not be held at 100% continuously.
