About Boat Battery

We’re Gabriel and Kristy, the couple behind BoatBattery.com.au and YouSail.

Planning a life aboard

Our dream is simple. Buy a sailing yacht, move aboard and see where the wind takes us. Australia first. Then the Pacific. Maybe much further.

We’re not there yet. We’re still learning, taking courses, spending time on boats and asking a lot of questions.

One of those questions kept coming back: how do we power life on a boat?

How much battery capacity do we need? Will solar keep up with the fridge, lights and electronics? Is lithium worth it? What needs to change when replacing an AGM battery bank? And how do we make sense of all the different models available in Australia?

The answers were scattered across manufacturer websites, manuals, forums and Facebook groups. We wanted a place that brought the information together and made the assumptions clear. So we built it.

The boat battery guide we needed ourselves

That’s Boat Battery. It’s a guide to choosing and planning boat batteries in Australia, built by two sailors in the making.

We bring together marine battery guides, model-to-model comparisons, battery sizing calculators and practical planning checklists. The aim is to help you understand your boat’s needs and ask better questions before spending money.

We’re not going to pretend we’ve tested every battery or fitted out every kind of yacht. We haven’t. We’re learning as we go and sharing what we find. Product specifications come from the sources listed on our comparison pages; they are not independent test results.

Calculators show their assumptions. Missing information and conflicting specifications stay visible. Installation decisions belong with a suitably qualified professional who can assess the actual boat.

Meet Gabriel Machuret, our founder

Gabriel’s background is marketing, SEO and app store optimisation. He has spent more than a decade helping people find useful information online. Boat Battery brings that experience together with our plans to live aboard.

He’s based in Merimbula on the NSW South Coast, and has a habit of building websites around the life he wants to live. First diving. Now sailing.

How we research and support the site

Our methodology explains the calculations, and our editorial policy sets out how we approach sources and corrections. Some retailer links may earn a commission; our disclosure policy explains this. Brands do not pay for placement or rankings.

Software and AI-assisted tools can help with research, drafting, code and illustrations. Human editors remain responsible for checking sources, publication decisions and corrections. If you find something that needs fixing, please send us the model number and source.

Be part of the journey

If you represent a marine brand, supply or install boat batteries, or simply want to talk boats, we’d love to hear from you. Email gabriel@yousail.com.au.

Somewhere out there is the yacht that will become our home. Until then, we’re doing the homework and sharing it.

For everything else in Australian sailing, from schools and clubs to charters and brokers, head to yousail.com.au.

See you on the water.
