Battery, charging equipment and installation cost breakdown

Across all nine hulls the batteries average about 37% of the installed cost. The guide has said that from the first chapter; this is it modelled across indicative Australian price bands rather than asserted.

Asked most

How much does it cost to convert a boat to lithium in Australia?

Between $1,660 on a small trailer boat and $21,070 on a liveaboard, installed and certified. The batteries are only about 37% of that; the rest is the charging system, the cable and the electrician.

Why is the battery only a third of the cost?

Because lithium is a charging project, not a battery swap. A DC-DC charger so the alternator survives, a controller with a real lithium profile, a shunt monitor, a Class-T fuse and new cable where the old runs were sized for lead-acid — those add up to as much as the cells on most boats.

Can I save money doing it myself?

You may reduce labour, but the work still has to meet the rules applying to the vessel and jurisdiction. Mains-voltage and commercial-vessel work can carry specific licensing or certification duties. Even where owner work is permitted, an insurer may require professional assessment and a complete evidence pack.
