How to Connect Boat Solar Panels to Lithium Batteries

Wire the panels to an MPPT controller with a true lithium profile, land the controller's output on the bank through its own fuse, and connect the battery side before the panel side when commissioning.

Equipment and information required

  • An MPPT controller rated at or above array watts ÷ bank voltage
  • A fuse for the controller's output
  • A way to cover or isolate the panels

How to Connect Boat Solar Panels to Lithium Batteries: steps

  1. Check the controller has a real lithium profile

No float stage and no equalisation. Verify in the manual. A controller that floats a lithium bank holds it at high state of charge, which is where it ages fastest, and an equalisation cycle can exceed the pack's voltage limit.

  2. Confirm the PV input voltage limit

Calculate from your panels in series using open-circuit voltage on a cold morning, not rated operating voltage. Exceeding this limit destroys the controller instantly and is not covered by warranty.

  3. Connect the battery side first

MPPT controllers detect system voltage from the battery. Connecting panels first can leave the controller unable to identify the bank, and some are damaged by it. Battery, then panels — reverse the order to decommission.

  4. Fuse the controller's output at the bank

The output cable runs to a source that can deliver thousands of amps into a fault. It needs its own protection near the bank, sized to the cable.

  5. Land the negative on the load side of the shunt

If the controller's negative goes to the battery side of the shunt, every amp of solar is invisible to the monitor and the state of charge will read permanently low.

  6. Set the charge parameters to the pack

Absorption voltage, absorption time and the cut-off from the pack's own specification. Generic lithium presets are a starting point, not the answer.

  7. Verify output on a sunny day

Compare the controller's reported current against the array rating divided by bank voltage. Substantially less usually means shading, a series string pulled down by one panel, or a wiring fault.

Common installation and calculation errors

Connecting the panels before the battery.

Battery first, always. The controller reads system voltage from it.

Landing the controller negative directly on the battery.

It goes on the load side of the shunt, or the monitor never sees the solar.
