Follow the battery maker’s storage instructions, account for every remaining load and confirm what charging can do in cold conditions. Storage is a system plan, not just a battery percentage.
Follow the battery storage instructions
Start with the exact battery manual. Recommended storage state of charge, temperature limits and inspection intervals differ between products. Do not copy a universal storage percentage from a forum. Record the condition of the bank before lay-up and the manufacturer’s instructions you are following so there is a clear reference when the boat returns to service.
Identify connected loads during lay-up
List everything left connected. Bilge systems, trackers, alarms, monitors and the battery’s own electronics can continue drawing energy after the main cabin switches are off. Decide which loads must remain available and how their demand will be supported. Turning off a house-bank switch may not isolate every circuit, and isolating everything may disable a necessary protection system.
Review unattended charging
Review unattended charging with the installer and marina. Solar can begin charging on a cold morning while nobody is aboard. Confirm the actual battery temperature limits and how the system prevents charging outside them. Do not disable protection to get around a cold-weather interruption. Keep charging controls and required monitoring consistent with the equipment instructions.
Schedule inspection and recommissioning
Set a practical inspection routine and a return-to-service check. Look for water entry, damaged wiring or unexpected discharge before enabling normal loads. If the bank has shut down or behaves abnormally, follow its documented recovery procedure and contact support when necessary. Avoid repeated resets that hide an unresolved fault or consume the remaining reserve.

Frequently asked questions
Can I leave solar connected over winter?
Only with a storage arrangement compatible with the battery, controller and vessel requirements. Confirm temperature protection and unattended charging behaviour for the actual system.

Calculate your boat battery capacity
The house bank calculator takes your loads, your nights on the hook, your solar and your alternator, and returns the bank, the DC-DC charger, the AGM equivalent and the weight you take off the boat.
