A monitor estimates state of charge from measured current and configured assumptions. Wrong capacity, bypassed current paths or missed synchronisation can make the percentage drift.

State of charge estimation and setup history

Treat state of charge as a useful estimate with a setup history. A shunt monitor counts energy moving into and out of the bank, then uses configured parameters to maintain its estimate. If the bank capacity changes but the settings do not, the displayed percentage can become misleading even though current measurement appears normal.

Capacity and synchronisation settings

Check the documentation from the installation first. Confirm the battery capacity entered, the synchronisation criteria and whether those values match the actual battery and charger system. Do not simply force the display to 100 percent whenever it looks wrong. That can conceal the reason the monitor lost track and give a false sense of reserve.

Loads bypassing the shunt

Current that bypasses the shunt will not be counted correctly. An added solar controller, inverter return or small always-on device can create this problem after an otherwise sound installation. Ask the installer to check the current paths against the wiring diagram. Avoid moving live battery cables as a troubleshooting experiment.

Check readings against known loads

Compare the current reading with known loads and charging states. Record discrepancies and any recent equipment changes before seeking support. Voltage, battery-management alarms and charger status provide useful context, but they are not interchangeable with an accurate energy counter. Once the cause is corrected, follow the monitor manufacturer’s synchronisation procedure and keep the settings with the boat’s records.

Useful evidence for support

  • Monitor model and configured bank capacity
  • Last known reliable synchronisation
  • Recent wiring or appliance changes
  • Current reading with known loads
  • Battery and charger alarms

Frequently asked questions

Should I reset the monitor whenever it disagrees with the battery app?

No. The devices may use different estimation methods. Check their configuration and measurement paths before resetting either one.
