Ask for a labelled system diagram, equipment and protection details, approved settings, applicable documentation and a demonstration of normal operation, alarms and isolation.
Arrange the onboard commissioning demonstration
Arrange the handover while the installer is still aboard. Walk through the normal routine: leaving the berth, charging from the engine, returning to shore power and shutting down after the trip. You should know which controls are ordinary operating controls and which are for faults or maintenance. An unlabeled switch is not a substitute for an explanation.
Verify charging modes and alarms
Have the installer demonstrate the agreed operating modes and record the results. Ask how charger limits and battery protection interactions have been checked safely. Do not create a short circuit, deliberately overheat a battery or disconnect a charging alternator to test the system yourself. The commissioning method should be appropriate to the actual equipment.
Collect diagrams and configuration records
Collect the final diagram, circuit labels, battery and charger serial numbers, settings and maintenance instructions. Ask which certificates or reports apply to your vessel and the work performed, rather than assuming one document covers every recreational and commercial situation. Keep warranty contacts and the installer’s support arrangements with the invoice.
Prepare crew operating instructions
Make one short owner-facing page for the crew. Include normal readings, the first response to an alarm, where to isolate the system and who to call. After the first representative trip, send the installer any unexpected behaviour with timestamps and photographs. A measured follow-up is more useful than changing multiple settings until the symptom disappears.
Before the installer leaves
- Normal operation demonstrated
- Alarms and safe response explained
- Final diagram and circuit labels supplied
- Settings, serial numbers and manuals saved
- Support and warranty contacts confirmed
Frequently asked questions
Should I test the BMS by deliberately draining the bank to cutoff?
Do not improvise a protection test. Ask the installer for a safe, manufacturer-appropriate commissioning procedure and an early operational warning point.

Calculate your boat battery capacity
The house bank calculator takes your loads, your nights on the hook, your solar and your alternator, and returns the bank, the DC-DC charger, the AGM equivalent and the weight you take off the boat.
