Measure the access opening, installed clearance, terminal space and restraint points—not just the battery tray. A battery that fits on paper may be impossible to service aboard.
Battery access and enclosure dimensions
Draw the compartment from above and from the side. Record the smallest opening the battery must pass through, including removable trim, nearby plumbing and the angle needed to lower it into place. Allow for the handles and the weight you will need to control. A cardboard mock-up of the proposed enclosure is a useful check before ordering.
Terminal clearance and cable bend space
Next draw the electrical space. Terminals need protected clearance, and heavy cables need room to bend without pulling sideways on a stud. Fuse holders, switches and busbars occupy space too. An installation that hides the main fuse behind the battery can turn a straightforward service visit into a full removal job.
Water exposure and temperature
Look at the environment rather than assuming a dry compartment stays dry. Note bilge level, deck leaks, nearby engine heat and any gear normally stored against the enclosure. Check the manufacturer’s permitted mounting orientation, environmental rating and spacing requirements. A sealed case does not make every terminal or connection waterproof.
Restraint and maintenance access
Photograph the compartment empty and with the proposed layout marked. Ask the installer how the bank will be restrained under vessel movement and how labels, alarms and isolators will remain accessible. Keep access for future replacement in the design: another battery model may not share the same dimensions. Resolving these questions now is cheaper than relocating an installed bank.
Measurements to take aboard
- Smallest access opening and lifting route
- Tray footprint and clear height above terminals
- Cable bend space and service access
- Restraint fixing points and surrounding structure
- Water exposure and nearby heat sources
Frequently asked questions
Can a lithium battery lie on its side?
Only when the exact battery manufacturer permits that orientation. Do not infer permission from another brand or a similar enclosure.
