Lithium vs AGM Battery Lifetime Cost on Boats: explanation

Lithium gives you 80% of the label where AGM gives you 50%, holds its voltage while you use it, and accepts charge far faster — so a 400 Ah lithium bank does more work than 600 Ah of AGM and weighs around 90 kg less.

If the boat is for sale within two years you will not recover the difference. That is the honest case against, and we publish it before the shortlist.

Compare systems over your expected ownership period. Include changes to charging, monitoring and protection in the lithium case, and compare usable energy rather than the same nameplate amp-hours. A boat used a few weekends each year may never realise an assumed cycle-life saving.

Keep non-price priorities visible: weight, charging opportunities, available space and service support may influence the decision. Use a low-use and a high-use scenario instead of presenting one payback date as certain. Treat future battery life and resale value as assumptions, not guaranteed savings.
